Document Review

Required Documents


Under 18 year old driver:
A. Proper ID, school ID with picture.
B. Level 1 Learners Permit which you must have held for 180 days from the date of issuance from the Secretary of State office. The date can be found above the word “Graduated” on the permit. Make sure you count 180 days from that date.
C. Segment 2 Completion Certificate
D. Valid proof of insurance and registration for the vehicle
E. A parent or guardian with proof of guardianship or a 21 year old licensed driver who has written consent from the parent or guardian.
F. All persons under 18 years of age must be accompanied on the road test by a parent, or appointed person over 21 years and a licensed driver. Please bring a vehicle that has front and rear seats. Parents will sit in rear of the vehicle. We cannot have three people in the front seat.


If any of the above documents are expired the test will be terminated.

18 year old or older driver:
A. Proper ID with picture.
B. A valid Michigan Temporary Instruction Permit.
C. Valid proof of insurance and registration for vehicle.

If any of the above documents are expired the test will be terminated.

 

 

 

 

 

Vehicle Inspection

All vehicles must pass a vehicle inspection.
If the vehicle fails the inspection the test will be terminated. The following safety equipment guidelines will be used when administering the automobile road skills tests. Together, examiners and applicants will inspect and familiarize themselves with specific vehicle components. Any defective vehicle equipment as outlined by the State of Michigan is reason for failure.

Safety inspection includes the following equipment:

  • Brakes
  • Brake lights
  • Center-mounted rear brake light on 1986 or newer models
  • Doors (*)
  • Fuel level
  • Headlights
  • Heater/Defroster
  • Horn
  • Lug nuts (only one can be missing per vehicle)
  • Muffler
  • Rearview mirror and outside left mirror
  • Safety belts for all occupants
  • Speedometer
  • Suspension components
  • Taillights
  • Tires (properly inflated; not damaged)
  • Turn signals (front and rear)
  • Windshield (**)
  • Windshield wipers and washers

* The driver and passenger doors must work from the inside and outside. Doors that cannot be opened are safety hazards.
